One of the overt truths known to all is that money influences decision-making and that funding and other financial matters are fundamental parts of politics. Despite a long tradition of scientific inquiries, the results of empirical research into this field are still limited; political reality always seems to be one step ahead of scholars who are attempting to uncover the hidden channels where political money flow. This lack of academic knowledge is more evident in Europe than in the US, particularly in the newly democratised, post-communist countries in the East. This section aims at narrowing this gap between the advanced US and the still under-developed European scholarship on political finances.
